To create this authentic effect you will need the following items:

Black paint , Gold paint, a coloured paint, a damp cloth and a paint brush. For the example shown here the Dark Red paint has been used, however this technique also works well with Bright Green or Blue paint as a base colour.

Paint your ornament with your base colour i.e. Dark Red, Blue or Bright Green then leave to dry.

Once your base colour has dried you should then add the next layer of paint. Mix the Black paint with a small amount of water so that the paint is a little thinner, then apply the paint over the coloured base. This Black paint should then be immediately wiped of using a damp cloth so that the Black remains only in the textured/patterned areas.

Once this has dried, depending on the effect you wish to achieve, some Gold paint could be added with a dry brush to highlight the raised areas.
